The research aimed to strengthen the reading comprehension process of the first-grade students of the Chápala Rural School, located in the municipality of Cucunubá, Cundinamarca. The methodology adopted was a qualitative descriptive approach. Among the findings, it was evident that the students have difficulties recognizing the alphabet and phonemes, lack the habit of reading, and do not have adequate stimulation to develop cognitive skills; therefore, they do not generate significant learning. Similarly, a low reading level was found among the students, highlighting the need to implement pedagogical strategies according to their needs to strengthen reading comprehension and, consequently, the acquisition of skills specific to this stage of the educational process. The strategies used included reading stories and fables, workshops, games as a teaching tool, educational materials, interactive activities mediated by ICT, and cooperative work, which favored the development of reading skills and allowed for improved learning.
