This article presents in a systematized way the incidence of planning in the Colombian educational environment. The objective was focused on analyzing aspects related to educational planning in Colombia and its main challenges, to reflect on where to direct efforts. For that purpose, a documentary review was carried out using the scientific production content analysis technique through guiding questions. The main research problem is that, at present, educational planning does not respond to the realities of educational institutions or their social contexts; in many cases, planning is only a legal requirement to be presented to the territorial entities, but it has no echo in educational management, a fact that directly affects the achievement of results, which is reflected in educational quality and the formation of an individual that satisfies the needs of Colombian society. The results show that, in Colombia, planning responds to collective interests for human and social development, as long as it complies with certain elements at the political level, legal and organizational reforms of the educational system; however, although educational policies are drawn around planning, they do not have the effect they should. Therefore, it is concluded that planning leads to educational management by guaranteeing economic, human, technological, and administrative resources, which entails visioning future situations, addressing problems according to the educational reality, and the opportunity to improve the quality and satisfaction of the needs of the educational community. Among its challenges are the following: the resignification of the Institutional Educational Project, the integration of the educational community, and the adequate application of current regulations at the time of planning.
