The research was carried out under the qualitative paradigm and its scope was descriptive, which implied identifying musicians, groups, musical directors, and composers in social and cultural contexts where they interact, around the rural music contests of the municipality of Pasto from 2007 to 2011. As part of the discussion of this work, it is exposed that the musical identity of the rural area is not limited to popular musical themes or works known as ‘sonsureños’; on the contrary, the research reveals that there is a musical identity with several traditional kinds of music in the rural area of the municipality that generate more identities that cohabit and interact in the same geographic-cultural territory. With the results, it was possible to identify the geographic location of the villages and rural communities, the music performed by the musicians, musical directors, and composers, and the most common instrumental formats.
