Objective: to determine the relationship between environmental factors and sleep and rest alterations in institutionalized elderly adults and living at home residents in the city of Pasto. Methodology: the quantitative research paradigm was used, of descriptive type, with correlational approach. For data collection, the Geriatric Sleep Quality Rating Scale and checklist created by the researchers were used. A convenience sample of female gender was selected. Results: 50% of institutionalized older adults and 60% of elderly adults living at home are unable to sleep easily; 35% of the population states that one of the factors that negatively affects is lighting. Conclusions: the application of the instruments allowed the identification of physical, social and attitudinal risk factors that influence this process. Likewise, lack of family support can increase the likelihood of acquiring emotional illnesses that are directly related to sleep disorders.
