The study, with a critical social approach with pedagogical design and qualitative constructivist methodology due to its subjective nature, aimed to apply flow diagrams with a didactic unit for solving mathematical problems that involve procedures for calculating the surface area of pyramids, with ninth grade students of the IEM Centro de Integración Popular and San Juan Bosco of San Juan de Pasto, in order to analyze and identify the strengthening of variational and spatial mathematical thinking, and of some mathematical competencies, such as formulation and resolution problems and reasoning, through the application of the didactic unit.Researchers are part of the process by guiding a proposed didactic unit, which allowed students to apply the concepts and methods of flow diagrams. As a result of the investigation after the analysis of the information obtained through field diaries, and its respective triangulation, it is concluded that the flow diagrams represent a facilitating tool for the understanding of mathematical content, speeding up to some extent the resolution of problems and improving the processes of logical reasoning in the specific case of calculating the surface area of ​​pyramids.
