Disability and determinants of health people with stroke, San Juan de Pasto

Abstract

Objective: To establish the relationship between the Social Determinants of Health and the human functioning, considering the activity and participation components of people with Stroke at San Juan de Pasto city. Methods: The cohort study with an intentional sample of 98 people with Stroke, over 18 years, with a minimum of 6 months of evolution of the lesion, without cognitive or language deficit, users of health institutions and specialized centers in the city of Pasto. It was used the instrument of Social Determinants of Health and tool of evaluation activity limitations and participation restrictions. Results: the highest percentage of the population is male (54,1%), over 65 years of age, from strata 1 and 2 (78,6%), with a low level of education (they attended until preschool and incomplete primary —17,1 y 27,1%— respectively) they do not report current labor activity (84.6%), nor economic income (51.1%). Significant correlations were found between the socioeconomic stratum, the housing condition and the consumption of medications, with the limitation in activity and restriction in participation (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results provide evidence regarding activity limitations, participation restrictions and social inequities in the population studied with Stroke at San Juan de Pasto city. This information can be used to advance initiatives and public actions at the departmental level, emphasizing social conditions and multidimensional aspects of disability. © 2020 Revista Facultad Nacional de Salud Publica.
