This article is a cabinet investigation that graphically shows how, when considering various social, cultural, educational and environmental elements, it is possible for higher education institutions to create flexible curricula that foster sustainable development. Having scarce literature that involves academic flexibility and sustainable development, the objective was to create a strategic model that strengthened the importance of these issues. The methodology was qualitative, cross-sectional, where the variables were not modified and a documented tool was obtained. The main result is that the flexible curriculum must include the promotion of sustainable development, as long as the context is taken into account; in this case, Mexico, which presents certain peculiarities. When talking about sustainability, the issue should be addressed with greater interest since childhood and be reinforced at a higher level. Key words: sustainable development, curricular flexibility, strategic model, society.Modelo estratégico que apresenta a relação entre o currículo flexível e o desenvolvimento sustentávelEste artigo é uma investigação de gabinete que mostra graficamente como, ao considerar vários elementos sociais, culturais, educacionais e ambientais, é possível criar currículos flexíveis que promovam o desenvolvimento sustentável para instituições de ensino superior. Tendo escassa literatura que envolve flexibilidade acadêmica e desenvolvimento sustentável, o objetivo era criar um modelo estratégico que reforçasse a importância dessas questões. A metodologia foi qualitativa, transversal, onde as variáveis não foram modificadas e onde foi obtida uma ferramenta documentada. O principal resultado é que o currículo flexível deve incluir a promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável, desde que o contexto seja levado em consideração; neste caso, o México, que apresenta certas peculiaridades. Quando se fala de sustentabilidade, a questão deve ser tratada com maior interesse desde a infância e ser reforçada em um nível mais alto.Palavras-chave: desenvolvimento sustentável, flexibilidade curricular, modelo estratégico, sociedade.
