This article shows how the conceptual advances of the discipline have a direct impact on the achievement of professional identity, simultaneously with training as intellectuals, academics and active participants in the processes of social, economic, political and cultural transformation of their communities. We chose the descriptive design documented as a method, in three chronological sections: 2000-2004, 2005-2009 and 2010 until 2015; a review was made in the following databases: Nursing Global, Scielo, Revista Aquichan, Lilacs, Medline, Pubmed, among others; 150 articles were analyzed, leaving 52 relevant for the study. The results showed that in the last 15 years the Latin and Spanish Nurseries have been constituted as an autonomous discipline, an open and transdisciplinary field of research, a territory where there are different human realities, with needs for care and integral care; so that, in front of the nurse is located, not only a professional, technical or ethical challenge, but a social commitment to the people they serve and the institutions where they carry out their activities.
